Alfa Romeo Tipo B
The Alfa Romeo Tipo B was the second single seat car that was specifically designed for the Grand Prix racing circuit. The car actually won all of the three major Grand Prix races in Italy, France and Germany. The car was designed by Vittorio Jano in Italy. This made the car a first among many aspects in the racing world. The popularity of the car was mainly because it was the first single seat race car, but it was also aided by the fact that the car won its first race that it ever competed. Another fact about the Alfa Romeo Tipo B was that it was considered very lightweight for a racing car, which did help it take off faster and reach higher speeds than other competing cars. The car weighed around 1,545 pounds, which was very light for the time period. The body of the car was mainly aluminum which helped to aid the lightweight of the vehicle in order to run much faster than the opposition.
Engine wise, the Alfa Romeo Tipo B was running an engine of eight cylinders that was actually built from two four cylinder blocks. Each of these four cylinder blocks was attached to a supercharger which gave the car even more speed. The engine was made completely of cast iron which did add to the weight of the car, however, since it was already considered such a light weight car, you could imagine how much lighter it would have been if the engine was not in place. The transmission was a three speed manual and it could reach around 190 miles per hour, which is nothing compared to race cars of today, however for the time period it was revolution.
These cars are very unique in not only how they were built, but the number that was built. When the cars first came into the racing world in 1932, only six were built. Many of these were sold to private people. Which means finding one today means that you are visiting a museum. The company had some financial misfortune after they introduced the Alfa Romeo Tipo B to the world, thus they did stop producing them for quite some time. By 1935, the Alfa Romeo Tipo B was enlarged because of the rules that were set in place, which basically meant the era was over in such a short period of time.
The Alfa Romeo Tipo B has many other names that are associated with it. Names such as the Alfa Romeo P3 or the Alfa Romeo P3 Monoposto. The car itself was based on the Alfa Romeo P2, which was the earlier model of the vehicles that also incorporated the single seat. The reason that Tipo B was designed was so that it would produce much faster speeds than the earlier version of the vehicle. All in all, the car will always be viewed as one of the best race cars of all time.
